Yeh Dil Maange More…

August 11, 2012 Leave a comment

2012 is more than half-way through and we have heard some fairly decent soundtracks coming out of Bollywood this year, including “Kahaani” and “Jannat 2“. With the sole intention of initiating a discussion with all of you, I decided to list my personal favorites soundtracks from the past five years…soundtracks that were COMPLETE, with not even a SINGLE song worthy of skipping. Where more was less!

A tough list to pick no doubt. See if your fav(s) are listed here…or let me know if they are missing. 🙂

2007

  • Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom: Full-on masti-filled collection, penned by Gulzar and music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (SEL). Includes gems like the title song, “Kiss of Love” and “Bol Na Halke Halke”.
  • Jab We Met: The movie that showed us a new Kareena Kapoor & Shahid Kapur, through songs like “Nagaara”, “Yeh Ishq Haaye” and “Tumse Hi”.
  • Aaja Nachle: One of the most underrated soundtracks from Salim-Sulaiman that marked ther return of Madhuri Dixit. Check out songs like “O Re Piya“, “Hulchul Hui“, “Soniye Mil Ja” and “Show My Your Jalwa” and and decide for yourself.

2008

  • Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na: A fun-filled, young-at-heart collection, lovingly composed by AR Rahman.
  • Singh Is Kinng: Pure Bhangra fun…with that ethereal “Teri Ore” to change the mood for the romantics.
  • Rock On!: The path-breaking “hatke” soundtrack of the year from SEL and Farhan Akhtar. Great songs…great lyrics…great film.

2009

  • Kaminey: Vishal directing and composing for Gulzar Saab, in a twisted crime caper. Fplendid Ftuff, I muft fay!!
  • Dev D: Our “official” introduction to the lyricist-composer duo of Amitabh Bhattacharya-Amit Trivedi. Thanks to Anuraag Kashyap and his memorable film.
  • London Dreams: Wonderful melodies penned by Prasoon Joshi and composed once again by SEL. An all-male singer soundtrack, in case you didn’t notice.
  • Love Aaj Kal: Classic example of a complete soundtrack, with a song for everyone. My personal favorites: “Yeh Dooriyaan” and “Chor Bazaari“.
  • Wake Up Sid: SEL and Amit Trivedi returned with another winning score…surprising for a Karan Johar film. Who can forget “Ik Taara” and “Kya Kahoon“?

2010

  • Anjaana Anjaani: Mohit Chauhan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Lucky Ali…all singing on one single soundtrack. Thanks Vishal-Shekhar!!
  • Once Upon A Time In Mumbai: A killer soundtrack by Pritam for a killer movie!!
  • I Hate Luv Storys: The second winner from Vishal-Shekhar in the same year. “Sajda Kiya” and “Bahaara” stood out.
  • Karthik Calling Karthik: Guess what? SEL yet again in a Farhan Akhtar film. A must-listen for its eclectic mix of songs.

2011

  • Rockstar: AR Rahman and Irshaad Kamil swept away every award with this winner last year. I am still humming “Phir Se Udh Chala” and “Tum Ho
  • Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara: I guess its never enough with SEL, Javed Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar. An absolute 100% winner.
  • Tanu Weds Manu: This one was my favorite last year with one gem following another through the entire album. A must-have for all music lovers.
  • Shaitan: This one may be a surprise…but the Shaitan soundtrack is so multi-layered like the film that despite its niche-audience appeal, it is still on my favorites list.

So this is it. Let me know if I forgot or missed any. But don’t forget the rule…EVERY SINGLE song has to be worthy enough for the entire soundtrack to make the cut.

Until then…Happy Listening!!
