The Frustrating World of Micheal Haneke

I recently watched my fourth film directed by the renowned Austrian director, Micheal Haneke.  I still have a few more to go before I am done watching at least his more well-known works…but if my past experience with his films is any indication, it will be a while before I am finished with his repertoire.

For those who don’t know much about him, Micheal Haneke swept away pretty much all the “foreign films” awards last year, from Cannes to the Golden Globes, with his German-language feature “THE WHITE RIBBON“. He also directed the controversial “THE PIANO TEACHER“, the horrific “FUNNY GAMES” (which was remade by him in English and starred Naomi Watts) and above all, the highly acclaimed “CACHE” with Juliette Binoche and Daniel Auteuil.

Taxing. Cumbersome. Frustrating.  These are the words that come to mind, when one watches Haneke’s work.  All the afore mentioned four films are tough to watch.  They move at a leisurely pace, have a storyline that is never clearly laid out but left for the audience to decipher (and discuss later), contain his trademark silent opening/ending credit sequences and have endings that don’t even remotely feel like a culmination.  Each one of his slow-moving films eventually take you to a high-point….only to then end abruptly.  Leaving you gasping!!

Is he a master filmmaker?  Possibly.  Even for me, who is a lover of “celebral storylines that make you think”, one or two films that don’t bring the story to a closure, are acceptable from a good director.  But every single one of them?  Give me a break!  And come to think of it, I have gone online after watching his films, to read movie blogs and to see what others thought of a particular movie…and its ending….and found no answers.  There is a lot of guessing, there is a lot of conjecture, there are tons of theories and possibilities….but none of them have ever been confirmed by even Haneke.

Will I watch his next movie?  Maybe.  But I know very well what state of mind that one will leave me in.  Dazed and Confused. Have any one of YOU ever felt your mind unravel during a Micheal Haneke offering??  If not, then watch “CACHE“.
