Shattered Hopes – When Talent Evaporates…

November 28, 2009 2 comments

Its one thing to watch a bad film from a bad director.  But what truly breaks my heart is when I have to watch a bad film from a director who has given us a good time at the movies at least once in the past.  2009 has also had its share of such disasters when we saw the talent of some good directors simply go kaput!!

We started the year with what was arguably the biggest disappointment of the year.  This was Rakeysh Mehra’s “Delhi 6“.  Mehra, who had dazzled us with his “Aks” and “Rang De Basanti”, had created a picture which left me dazed and confused.  Delhi-6 was a film that was neither here nor there, IMHO.

The torture continued with the talented Nagesh Kukunoor who had given us wonders like “Hyderabad Blues”, “Teen Deewarein” and “Dor”.  His messy “8×10 Tasveer” starred none other than Akshay Kumar and was amongst Nagesh’s weakest films to date.

The list of casualties then got sealed with “Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani” from Raj Kumar Santoshi.  Santoshi is the director who directed some of the hardest hitting films of the past two decades like “Ghayal”, “Ghatak”, “Damini”, “Pukar” and the wonderful “Khakee”.  Santoshi is also the creator of that phenomenon called “Andaz Apna Apna”.  But this time around, he gave us a comedy that was shamelessly lethargic and shoddy in its execution.  The jokes were flat, the acting was loud and the story…well, there was none, quite honestly!!

“Honorable” mentions should also go out to the following, although their latest 2009 offerings weren’t quite as full-blown a disaster as the afore-mentioned:

Imtiaz Ali (“Love Aaj Kal“).  Previous Outings: “Socha Na Tha”, “Jab We Met”
Vishal Bharadwaj (“Kaminey“).  Previous Outings: “Maqbool”, “Omkara”
Rohit Shetty (“All The Best“).  Previous Outings: The new “Golmaal” series

This list is by no means complete and I am sure that some of you will have other examples to quote as well.  I am also cognizant with those of you who would even disagree with my picks.  However, 2009 isn’t quite over yet.

On Dec.11, Shimit Amin will attempt to prove that his “Ab Tak Chhappan” and “Chak De India” were no flukes, with his Ranbir Kapoor starrer “Rocket Singh – Salesman of the Year“.  And then, on Dec.25, Raju Hirani attempts to show us a world other than that of “Munnabhai MBBS”, by exploring the lives of the “3 Idiots“.

Let us hope that, before the we say goodbye to the year, our faith in good directors is restored and that true talent does prevail in the end.

A New Beginning…

November 25, 2009 Comments off

Yes, I think that’s what this is…A New Beginning.  For a long time I’ve had a number of people telling me that I should blog on the web about the two things I am truly passionate about…music and movies.  But I had been procrastinating it all this time, always intending to set up my blog “today evening” but never quite getting to it.  Until today!  And now, here I am, close to midnight, writing my first ever blog…introducing myself to all of you…and hopefully starting a new chapter in my life.

Vix, Discs and Flix. Vix…that’s me.  Discs…that keep me going when I’m driving everyday, listening to that music I loaded on them the night before or a few days before.  And of course, flix, that we all love!!  Although I can talk about all three for hours and hours, I will try to restrict my blogs to the latter two…but infrequently throwing a dash of “Vix” into the mix, just for kickers.

The idea of this blog is not to review any movies or any music…but to just share my thoughts with all of you.  I may pick a new release and talk about or pull out a vintage album and tell you how much I adore it.  So, welcome to my world.  Welcome to Vix, Discs and Flix.  And to this new beginning!!
